A straight is a five-card hand with the same suit. For a straight to be considered a winning hand, two or more players must have a straight. When a straight is tied, the second-highest unmatched card breaks the tie. Similarly, a flush is won by the highest card in a flush.

There are many different variations of poker. The most common are draw poker and seven-card stud. Other types include lowball and split-pot poker.

Poker is often regarded as having Renaissance or Roman ancestry. In fact, the name may be a derivation of the French poque or a variation of the Persian as nas. As with most games, the name can be traced back to other cultures.
